How we use generative AI technology responsibly at 2UP Games.
This is a living document. We are constantly learning in this fast-moving field.
We define a minimum standard that we agree to work within.
We define higher standards that are not always possible without compromising our mission.
We commit to reviewing our level ("bronze" / "silver" / "gold") every quarter as part of our goal-setting process.
We acknowledge that, by using generative models, we stand on the shoulders of millions of people who created their training material.
We strive to honour the vast cultural richness embodied in generative models by making games that would otherwise not be possible. It’s not enough to make the same thing but faster/cheaper/larger.
We push to be transformative with everything we do, keeping the creative tradition of making old into new, avoiding direct mimicry.
We use AI to empower people.
For us: is an an amplifier on our work.
For players: it is experiences not possible before generative AI.
This is about choosing the generative tools we use based on the ethics of how they were created.
Bronze is our minimum standard, but higher is better where possible.
The resource maker has appropriate rights and consent for all training material, for commercial use.
The resource maker runs a practical opt-out process that works for artists, where authors’ work can be meaningfully omitted from the resource in some way if they choose.
The resource maker runs some kind of opt-out process for artists to remove their work from future models.
This is about how we use generative tools, and the standards we measure our input and output against.
Bronze is our minimum standard, but higher is better where possible.
Unknown: This is an extremely fast-moving field, and the gold standard for usage & process is not yet clear. We will review to uncover what this standard is over time.
Our Voice: The way we use AI has a ‘house style’ or a ‘deliberate tone of voice’ for each game.
The more of ‘ourselves’ we can put into the work, the better.
Transformative: Samples widely with a ‘mood board’ approach.
Does not ‘impersonate’ creators or brands. We commit to continually evaluating our output to ensure that this remains the case.

Bronze is our minimum standard, but higher is better where possible.
We set our goal of “unsafe content seen by players” at 0%, and work relentlessly towards it.
We measure, improve, and invest in additional tech to keep our players safe from harmful or biased content.
We try our best to reduce the chance of harmful, biased or offensive content with bang-for-buck approaches.
Our games have a reporting system.
The ethical standards apply to generating these types of media:
We treat all copyrighted works the same way, regardless of if the author is still alive.
Public domain works are fair game, as they always have been.
We haven’t covered code, but encourage tech team members to discuss this and update this policy as required.
We assume any content 2UP owns, made by employees as part of their work at 2UP, can be trained into models at our discretion.
